Hawkins Tower

The pictures in this collection are of our automatically controlled mini-layout called "Hawkins Tower".
It is the early 1960’s and in an old Victorian theme park a 2-foot narrow gauge railway was originally built around the grounds as an added attraction. The park still draws visitors, especially at weekends, and by the small lake there is a folly called “Hawkins Tower” after the name of the builder. Nearby a tea stall sells glorious cakes, fizzy drinks and tea.
The layout can be operated manually with a normal controller, or automatically utilising a “station stop” module built into the rear of the layout.
Trains are limited, as they would be in real life, to two or three four-wheeled coaches and a small selection of four-wheeled locomotives. It is presumed that there is an old wooden workshop further round the line, where a venerable old chap looks after the remaining stock week after week to keep them running.

Sampson Vale (2) - 009 Model Railway

This layout was built as a competition entry in a Chelmsford Model Railway Club 'Narrow Minded' micro layout competition. The layout had to have a French theme, so I chose to model it based on a Channel Island. There is a port complete with vessel, a Martello Tower, a bridge over a stream and a station modelled near the village of 'Sampson', all in 30" x 20"

Fotherham

This layout was inspired by the “Starter Layout” called “Hylton (Town)” shown in the Micro Layout Design Gallery on Carl’s Arendt’s website. It was mainly because I had been given a couple of baseboards by a dear (now deceased) friend, each was 640mm x 195mm (just 71/2” x 25” approx) and they had back and end scene boards attached. The starter layout plan seemed to fit these boards (with a little bit of adaption!). I liked the “complete” nature of the plan depicting the whole station area, the curved platform and goods siding especially appealed to me.
On the Starter Layout plan it had a parade of shops on the over-bridge and was quite wide, hiding some of the scenic area, and the fiddle yard was just a single track. I wanted a bit more versatility in the fiddle-yard and more of the scenic part of the layout visible, this I did by slimming down the over-bridge. I also added a short coal siding at the head shunt end of the layout where I modelled a small coal yard.
The back scene on the left-hand board was moved forward 70mm to allow for the fiddle-yard tracks, and after several checks with various train lengths both in the fiddle-yard and at the platform road, also allowing for the turnouts, a small piece of board was made for the fiddle-yard “scenic break” at about 470mm away from the end. All this planning with train lengths is vital on a small layout like this, otherwise the trains will simply not fit the sidings, and embarrassing problems will appear later when it is operated. The fiddle yard contains two sidings and a kick back siding to store the trains.
All the internal corners of the back scenes boards were then rounded off with plastic card and filler so no corner joints are visible in the back scene. My wife painted the sky and I added various pictures of buildings cut out of old calendars to give the impression of the village lying close by. Where the fiddle yard joined the scenic section, part of an N gauge Kibri Viaduct was used across the layout to disguise the entrance to the fiddle-yard. Adjoining this is a small rock face modelled to give the viaduct a "geological" reason for being where it is - a high bridge spanning a valley. All the buildings, the viaduct and most of the track and even the walls have been re-used from previous layouts so this little layout hardly cost me anything.
The scenic part of the layout in the coal yard is only 120mm deep (about 5”) due to the fiddle yard behind this area. I had to slim down several things in this area to fit things in, ie: the coal office is only half of a Ratio Weighbridge hut. The coal scales were scratch built out of plastic rod and sections from the bits box.

There are four electrical sections on the scenic section and the turnouts are operated by wire-in-tube beneath the baseboard. I used “Brush-it-On” for the ballasting on this layout. It dries a bit thin and it requires quite a lot of work cleaning up the rails afterwards. Perhaps with a little more skill the second time around I could get it to perform and look better.
Langley and Dapol figures, Skaledale Lamps and a couple of “Classix” vehicles finish off the layout.

Fotherham station lies at the end of a four mile branch line from the town of “Whitemoor” and is used for general goods, coal and passengers. Its future is constantly under review, but it has survived with public support right into the 1950’s, with a little help from a local dignitary called Lord Lennor.
The timetable for trains is a bit hit-and-miss, mainly due to its operator not having the time to sit down and run the layout for any length of time!

Basically, this little layout will be used at home to run anything on it, and as I now have many old loco kits and even Egger items that never get a run these days I’ll have a bit of fun with these when the mood suits me. As I had most of the buildings and scenery to hand I have enjoyed devising and building it very much.

Rye & Camber

Photographs taken in October 2006 of the site and remains of the Rye and Camber Tramway.

Between the years 1895 and 1939 the beautiful town of Rye in East Sussex had its own 3 foot gauge railway. Known as the Rye and Camber Tramway and from the far side if the River Rother it ran mostly parallel to the river to a station known as Golf Links then turned on to an extension (opened 1908) to the sand dunes and ran on to Camber Sands Station, a wooden halt.

Built originally to take fish from Rye Harbour to the town which did not really work because they took the fish direct to the fish quays instead, the Golf Club members used the line and also day trippers.

Originally it was run by two lovely 2-4-0 Bagnall locomotives named “Camber” and “Victoria” until 1925 when a 4 wheeled petrol locomotive was introduced, and continued services until the line was closed to passengers in 1939 when it was used for the war effort and was never re-opened.

Some of the rails still remain and also surprisingly, a corrugated iron station building at Golf Links.

Carne - 009 Model Railway

A tour around our last exhibition layout.

The plan for the layout would be a west country village with a sheep market - one of the main sources of traffic for the original railway company – with a road leading to the small hamlet of “Chapel End” and a large tract of scenery modelled between the two villages. The railway runs out of a tunnel from “Whitemoor Junction” and runs along the base of a cliff face behind some cottages, crosses the road leading from Carne village on an un-gated level crossing and arrives at Chapel End halt. The track then leads round a right-hand curve around a small lake and over a bridge crossing a stream, carrying on beside the road, passing the old engine shed at Carne, and into the terminus station.

There are only two sheep trains run each week by the railway company serving farms along the line and meanwhile a group of enthusiasts have formed to try to save the railway from closure. They have been allowed to rent the old engine shed at Carne for basic workshop facilities and have been loaned locomotives to attempt to run passenger trains again to encourage visitors to the area.

At the terminus, a turntable would be used rather than end of loop turnout and head-shunt, this alone gave about five inches extra run.

The fiddle yard cassettes were made in different lengths, two to hold locomotives and three for rolling stock. They are constructed from 12mm mild steel angles screwed to 6mm soft wood strips. They simply connected to the power supply by touching two wire braids hung from brass hooks.

The track was heavily weathered to look unkempt. Weeds were added between the sleepers both inside and outside the rails by dripping drops of dilute PVA into three to four inch sections of track at a time and applying scraps of Woodland Scenics foliage and fine flocks. This took several evenings to do, but the effect is worthwhile.

Three different controllers have been used with the layout: an old H&M Clipper bought for me by my late mother when I was a teenager! a Gaugemaster handheld model WS and best of all, a KPC handheld model KFS/E/FC, which allows fine control of locomotives at slower speeds.

I purchased and fitted a Trax Controls “Chuffer” unit as I wanted steam sound. To enhance this even more, a separate switch was fitted across the terminals so that a continuous “hiss” could be heard when the locomotive was coasting.

As the Carne village scene is only half as deep as the rest of the layout, the buildings are widely spaced at the rear of the station yard so that you can see across the road to the buildings along the back-scene, then extra views (cut up calendar pictures) are carefully placed on the back board between the buildings to give an impression of extra depth. Perhaps the only way to appreciate this is to look at the photographs. The back scene is nine inches high and painted light blue with emulsion from match-pots.

Over the years I have collected many of the Langley animals and birds, and these may been seen all over the layout. Figures are Langley, Dapol and Preiser. The period road signs are by Tiny Signs.

I used about a dozen reliable locomotives for exhibitions, and below are the main locos to be seen on Carne:
No.4 a Chivers 0-4-2 Edward Thomas kit on a Bachmann chassis - modified to Corris appearance.
No.11 “Leviathan” 0-6-0 tram engine, an old Varikit on a Farish 08 chassis. This seems to run superbly for an hour or so and then gets very jerky. I have not found a reason for this yet after many years of running it!
No.12 “Leader” a Chivers quarry Bagnall 0-4-0 tank kit, running on its second Ibertren chassis.
No14 “Llew” a Jouef-Egger 0-4-0 Decauville loco modified with open backed cab.
No.15 “Luther” a Paul Windle 0-6-0 Sharp Stewart tram engine. The most reliable and best running loco in the stud.
No.16 “Ludo” a Windle 2-4-0 Jessie type Bagnall running on a Bachmann chassis. This was the first Paul Windle loco I bought. When it arrived I sat looking at it for about half-an-hour spell bound, a beautiful little loco made by a craftsman.
No.17 “Lynton” another bargain from a toy fair bought for £15. It had an almost new Minitrix 0-6-0 chassis but the body was in a bad state. It was repaired, re-painted and had handrails and small details added. These chassis are not renown for smooth running, but as long as they are kept clean and serviced regularly they can be reliable runners.

My own preference with railway modelling is to achieve the narrow gauge atmosphere in a realistic setting. My layouts and trains are not one hundred percent prototypical but do seem to please most onlookers.

Sampson Vale - 009 Model Railway

This layout was built as a competition entry in a Chelmsford Model Railway Club 'Narrow Minded' micro layout competition. The layout had to have a French theme, so I chose to model it based on a Channel Island. There is a port complete with vessel, a Martello Tower, a bridge over a stream and a station modelled near the village of 'Sampson', all in 30" x 20"
